How did Gustavus prepare you for seminary school?⁠
The intimate classroom settings we find at a small liberal arts school like Gustavus was great preparation for life in Seminary. Gustavus was also a critical part of my discernment process. In undergrad I was able to pursue a variety of passions including music and psychological studies which have both been beneficial to my work in ministry so far. ⁠
What advice would you give Gusties thinking about Seminary School?⁠
Do it! Explore! There are so many incredible things you can get out of a seminary education (beyond just ordination, though that is good too). ⁠
What was your call, why did you decide to take this path?⁠
I grew up in the Lutheran church and adored going to church camp as a child - I always knew someday I would be a camp counselor. I got connected to Sky Ranch Lutheran Camp in CO at the camp fair at Gustavus, and after my first summer working at camp I really began to feel the call to ministry. I studied music and psychology at GAC with the hope of becoming a music therapist, but after working at camp again post graduation I realized I could just as easily use these gifts in ministry. I found a job as a Youth Director in SE MN at Lands Lutheran Church and when I was hired they were very intentional in telling me I would be a resource for the whole congregation - not just the youth and families. Eventually I came to realize the more "pastoral" aspects of my job were my favorite parts, so I decided to go to seminary!
