Jacksonville — 2 new exhibits are now open at the CummerMuseum in Riverside!

It’s been a while that an exhibit keeps my interest for almost two hours, let alone have me planning out my next visit before even leaving the museum. Museum exhibits are obviously for everyone to enjoy, but these 2 neighboring exhibits should especially be seen by my artist friends in the city (particularly those keen on Japanese / Filipino cultures). The richness in the details - and the stories behind the images - is just *chefs kiss* 🤌😍

1. ‘Tattoos in Japanese Prints’ - Oct 27th until Jan 14, 2024. Some of the world's most popular tattoo motifs trace back to early 19th-century Edo (modern Tokyo), where tattoo artists took inspiration from color woodblock prints known as ukiyo-e (shown in slides). This exhibit looks closely at the social background, iconography, & visual splendor of tattoos through the printed media that helped carry them from the streets of Edo-period Japan to 21st-century tattoo shops all over the world.

2. Maia Cruz Palileo, ‘Days Later, Down River’ (Maia is pictured in the first slide in front of their artwork).Oct 11th until Dec 30th. The works on view map an archival, geological, and spiritual topography of the Philippines—and are inspired by their recent residency at the University of Michigan, which houses one of the largest collections of Filipino artifacts outside of the country. Their paintings recontextualize stories, portraits, and images to resuscitate and remove from the exploitative gaze of the ethnographic image.
