“I’m running for my son Oliver. About a year ago he was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy… I couldn’t think of any other better opportunity than to raise awareness through the marathon.”

Susan Huang started running in 2022 after spending too much time at home during the pandemic. She said she needed to get out, move her body, and get in touch with nature. Born and raised in Brooklyn, she set her sights on the 2023 #TCSNYCMarathon.🗽🧡

“I grew up, every year watching the marathon in November so it’s so special to be able to be a part of New York Road Runners and running the marathon.”

Susan participated in the 9+1 program in 2022 to gain guaranteed entry to the 2023 TCS New York City Marathon. As she started her marathon training last year in July, her son Oliver was diagnosed with Duchenne muscular dystrophy, a rare neuromuscular condition that causes progressive muscle weakness and eventually loss of lung and heart function. The disease primarily affects boys and leads to death in the late teens to early 20s.

“I decided to use the NYC marathon as an opportunity to raise awareness and fundraise for an organization dedicated to finding a cure for Duchenne.”

She raised over $27,000 for parentprojectmd to support their mission to end Duchenne muscular dystrophy through research, care, and advocacy. Susan plans to run the marathon again this year and is continuing to fundraise for a cure.

“My son Oliver is turning 9 this year…. Despite being handed such challenging circumstances he’s so resilient and so motivated and so supportive of my running journey. He’ll be out there on marathon day in Park Slope cheering along on mile 7. He’s just so sweet and so supportive of everything that I do.”

Let’s show some 🫶 in the comments to Susan and her son Oliver and learn more about how you can run the #TCSNYCMarathon through membership and the 9+1 program at the link in bio.✍️
