🚨 SOS HAIR 🚨
Fantastic post by the_silver_dermatologist!

Hair thinning (so less hair as opposed to hair shedding, which is falling out) is very common in menopause and beyond. It doesn't mean that you need to run to see your doctor, and there are things that you can do to optimize your situation.

As a board certified dermatologist, I recommend that women optimize their protein intake from natural sources (aka food) by googling their food, aiming for a protein intake of > 70 grams per day. For people on a strictly plant based diet, it's more difficult but achievable.

Maintaining a healthy scalp with a medicated dandruff shampoo twice weekly is important. There is evidence that a ketoconazole shampoo blocks DHT but I personally prefer for my patients to use either Vichy Dercos Dandruff Shampoo or Ducray Kelual DS which are both very cosmetically appealing and help maintain a healthy scalp microbiome which I feel is more important.

None of these suggestions are sponsored just to be clear.

I recommend Vitamin D3 2000IU or more and a prenatal vitamin to help maintain iron and other levels over a multivitamin. Like other dermatologists, I don't recommend Biotin.

Definitely consider using Rogaine 5% foam or generic at bedtime. There is evidence to support the use also of diluted rosemary oil (so don't use it directly full strength, just a couple of drops diluted) but personally don't recommend it as it's a bit awkward to apply on a regular basis tbh.

Make sure that you are using a silk pillowcase in order to reduce hair breakage and damage. I personally use the enVy pillow (not sponsored) for my hair and other advantages that I will share in the future.
Try these tips and see how things go before seeking professional advice. Will discuss more about when to seek professional advice later.

Edited to add that I am not making any medical recommendations here, including when to seek professional medical help - will do that in future.
Keep in mind that hairloss is a symptom/sign. Not a diagnosis. This reel discusses hair thinning, which is a specific observation of noticing less hair.
