In a powerful interview with the nytimes, Irish author Sally Rooney took the opportunity to talk beyond the plot and share her views on our broken economic system. In the interview's podcast version, she also highlighted: "I don't feel myself thinking about my growth as an artist if you will (...) I think that there is a huge cultural fixation with novelty and growth. Our whole economic system is built on constant, permanent, ceaseless growth. We all have to grow, everything has to grow all the time. Get bigger, sell more, be different. Novelty, reinvention. Those are the principles of our present culture."⁣

The true value of people and the planet is also hidden behind this obsession with growth. GDP and the obsession with growth has long been the standard for economic success, but it is not made for people to live their best lives.⁣⁣
