The title track for ‘Asteroid’ is out now and was produced beautifully by kevinjsalem who absolutely nailed everything, even suggesting the perfect percussionist in codyrahn 

I chose this song as the album opener because it’s probably the most raw and real thing I’ve written. I always want the first song on an album to grab the listener, and often that means it has some bells and whistles or it’s punchy in some way, but when I wrote this song, it kind of wowed me with something different: the truth. When I was sequencing the record, I had a few passing doubts about putting this one first—what if I lose people? what if this doesn’t sound current? Is this even pop? is it jazz? Oh god, what if people think this is folk?—but then it occurred to me: I love everything about this song and it sets the tone for the album. All the songs connect back to this one very real line of thinking and this one very singular revelation of “Hi. This is me. This is who I am at my core.” And that’s what matters. 

This song is about all of my attempts to grow, to heal, to be good in the world, to be fair, to be a grown up. It’s also about failing and feeling absolutely defeated sometimes, and going out into nature to get right again.

On that note, I made this beautiful video one sweltering hot day at Onteora Lake in Kingston, NY with director jessedufault and mattpondpa (who suggested the ominous ending).
