Many thanks to wasatchmountainfilm for bestowing Feel It All with their Social Awareness Award. I’m humbled and equally stoked that this award even exists to celebrate the influence film, art, and story can have on social issues. 

In 2018, my first ever film Ski The Wild West (no need to go Google it; let’s just say my work has improved a lot 😜) was included in the Wasatch Mountain Film Festival. The experience epitomized the dissonance I was feeling in my life at that time. On one hand, I was living the dream. On the other, I was living a nightmare internally. Just that day, I woke up hungover, dislocated my shoulder twice and hid it both times from the crew I was with in the Jackson Hole backcountry, and a friend got caught in an avalanche. On the drive down to SLC, I stopped to visit a friend in the hospital who would never come out of the coma he was in. At the event itself, I felt like an imposter. I answered the Q&A about the Mount Hood accident with an emotional dissociation by following the script in my head that kept me from feeling anything at all.  Amidst all of this, I was having the most success of my ski career to that point and I was painting the picture of powder turns, smiles, and one trip after another all winter long. In reality, it was the middle of the spiral that nearly consumed me. 

Fast forward, and six years later with Feel It All in the same film festival, everything is different in the best way. I’m living true to myself, who I am, and I’ve found my compass that keeps me on my path: changing our culture surrounding mental health. 

Fittingly, there’s a little chapter of Feel It All in the Wasatch that tells the story of the WURL but is more so an illustration of the cognitive, emotional, and existential dissonance I was living back then.
