“I firmly believe that technology shapes our present and future society. As a rhythmic gymnast, I recognize the long-standing issue of subjective judging within athletics. I aim to use the skills I learn from my computing science degree to bring technological advancements to sports, and to create an objective scoring system that eliminates human error and unconscious bias. In Canada, rhythmic gymnastics are rarely funded, and the costs of training, equipment and travel to international competitions are high. Receiving the Schulich Leader Scholarship means being able to focus on my academic and athletic journey, without the worry of educational costs. It may also pave the way for me to participate in the 2025 Summer World University Games, a long-standing goal of mine.”

Selena is a first-year Computing Science student from Ottawa, Ontario and one of six recipients of the prestigious Schulich Leader Scholarship - awarded to some of the top high school students in Canada. Selena is looking forward to practicing her rhythmic gymnastics in the U of A Butterdome, which has extremely high ceilings, great for throws (or as she calls it, risks). Congrats, Selena! #ualberta
