Reminder that since 2000, Democrats have won the popular vote in every presidential election except one (George W. Bush vs. John Kerry, 2004).

So why haven’t Dems won the office each time? That’s because of the Electoral College.

Each state gets a certain number of electoral votes, based on the number of representatives they have in Congress.

On Election Day, whichever presidential candidate gets the most votes in the state takes ALL of the state’s electoral votes. Even if the candidate wins by just a single vote.

All votes cast for the opposing candidate are effectively thrown out. That means your ballot isn’t going into a nationwide count—it’s going into a statewide count.
(So don’t count on people in other states to elect the candidate you want to win—you’ve got to mobilize your friends and neighbors near you!)

*Note: Maine and Nebraska split their electoral votes between the winner of the popular vote and the winner of each individual district in the state.

Fun fact: There have been more proposals for Constitutional amendments to change the Electoral College than on any other subject—more than 700 over the past 200 years. (Source: National Archives)
