🏆 NCADA’s Alumni Leadership Award goes to a past participant in NCADA’s programs, board member, or staff who continued to uphold and represent the mission and values of NCADA beyond their time with the organization. “Happy Howard” Potratz is the epitome of everything that NCADA stands for. In celebration of Happy Howard’s impact on our community and the lives he has and will continue to change, the Alumni Leadership Award is being renamed, “The Howard Potratz Alumni Leadership Award.” Speaking on their friendship, experiences, and lessons learned from Howard Portratz are his two long-time friends, Jim Murphy and Nick Tompras.

🏆Born and raised in Iowa, after attending Wartburg College Happy Howard went on to receive an MBA from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He held many senior positions at major corporations in his career, including Proctor & Gamble, Planter’s Peanuts, Warner Lambert, and Kellwood, which brought him to St. Louis.

🏆 As a person in long-term recovery, Happy Howard is very involved in the St. Louis community. He was the President of the Board at the Lindell Club, and a board member of NCADA, Harris House, and Alcoholics Anonymous Central Service of St. Louis. Howard is very active in Alcoholics Anonymous. He started meetings, supported others, and was an active sponsor in AA, Al-Anon, and ACA. He is fond of the saying, “if you’re not in three programs, you’re probably in denial about something.”

🏆 Happy Howard is loved and adored by most he met in recovery. He is well-known by how he introduces himself, “Hi, I’m Happy Howard and I love myself.” The love Happy Howard has for himself reflected in the passion he has for helping others.

🏆 As a board member at NCADA, he brought his love and care to every program he was involved in, and his drive to grow the organization. He brought in several current board members, vocally supported past and current Executive Directors, regularly attended events, and was a very generous contributor to many NCADA programs. After pilot funding for the program ended, the organization was struggling to find funding to continue delivering service in the next year. Happy Howard made a substantial contribution, and without it the Transitional Counseling Program would not have survived.

🏆 NCADA will be forever grateful for the generosity, care, and love that Happy Howard has shared with the organization, and those we serve. #ThePlaceToTurn
