In New York’s beloved but competitive food scene, casaoranyc’s upscale Venezuelan menu has been a favorite since it opened in 2019.

Dishes like Pabellón a Caballo and Asado Negro capture the authentic taste of Venezuela, alongside appetizers and sides like Ceviche and Arepeas and over 25 signature cocktails. For owner ivodiaznyc, the goal has always been to blend rich culinary tradition with a fine dining experience that still felt like home. “Our goal was to showcase our culture through food in an intimate ambiance with traditional dishes that could be plated as a fine dining restaurant. We also wanted to recreate my grandma’s living room and library back home.”

By 2021, the eatery had been included in the Michelin guide, but not before the pandemic pushed their business online.“We didn’t do delivery prior to the pandemic, so we had to set up all these platforms during the hardest time in the world,” Diaz said. “Social media was our only outlet.”

On their Instagram profile, you’ll find posts filled with stunning photography, from close ups of their dishes, the restaurant’s cozy interior design, and shots of the prep that goes on beyond the kitchen doors. When asked which content performs the best, Ivo explained, “definitely anything that is personal, people love to get to know us and the team behind the making of this great experience.” 

This month, casaoranyc is set to open a sister location: lullasnyc. Named after his second daughter, it’s inspired by not only a love of cocktails and pastries, but the spirit of perseverance. “One of the key things that inspired me was failing back in 2011 when I tried opening a Venezuelan bakery and restaurant in Sunnyside, Queens,” Diaz said. Driven by that setback, Diaz brought the soul of Venezuelan cuisine to the heart of Brooklyn instead.
