It’s tempting to focus on the more-is-more experience of expo2020dubai:⁠ the mind-blowing #art installations, the lush parks, the new #technology, the massive exhibition center. And then there were the 192 pavilions, one for each participating nation, that let attendees immerse themselves in that country’s culture. The host didn’t disappoint on that front, either. Inspired by an eagle in motion, the UAE’s four-story LEED platinum structure by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava was a stop-in-your-tracks stunner.⁠

Yet #government leaders knew the event could also serve as a powerful showcase for the emirate’s innovations. And their ambitions extended far beyond the city’s borders. They wanted the expo to inform conversations about the world’s most pressing issues—#climate, space exploration, rural development, inclusivity—and forge new ways to galvanize meaningful action.⁠

“The intention of every World Expo is bringing people together and having them participate in an exchange of ideas,” says Daniel Hajjar, managing principal at HOK in Dubai.⁠

As the firm behind the expo’s master plan, HOK also helped organizers embed inclusion and #sustainability in its design decisions to align with U.N. Sustainable Development Goals. Case in point: At least 80 percent of the site will be reused, with the Al Wasl Plaza that served as a meeting hub becoming part of Dubai’s new trade center.⁠
