The USMNT are missing many players for tonight’s game against México, including Christian Pulisic and Weston McKennie. But Mauricio Pochettino says the objective is to win, and even humiliate the opponent if possible— sportingly of course.

“We want to win. Just like how we wanted to win against Panamá and just like how we will want to win for the games in November,” he said in the pre-game press conference.

“Let’s say me and you play marbles. I’m going to want to win, even if I’ve beaten you five times. I’m going to want to beat you six times, 10 times, even 20 times.”

“I’ll want to humiliate you, sportingly. Not humanly of course but sportingly.”

“It’s not the most ideal situation [with many players out] but we come here to compete. It is an ideal situation for young players who have the opportunity to be seen.”

The USMNT are playing a friendly in México for the first time in 12 years.

The only time they’ve won in México was also the last friendly game in México they played, a 1-0 win in 2012 played in the Azteca Stadium.

The goalscorer that day a Mexican-American defender Michael Orozco, who was playing in Liga MX at the time. Coincidentally, there are two Mexican-Americans in the current USMNT squad playing in Liga MX— Brandon Vázquez and Alejandro Zendejas.

Will they be the heroes for the USMNT tonight? Let’s see. 🇺🇸🇲🇽
