Dennette “DJ” Johnson has moved at least a half-dozen times in the years since she left Glenwood Resource Center.

The move had come after Glenwood became embroiled in controversy over allegations of insufficient medical care. On June 30, the state officially completed the two-year process to close the state-run institution and move all its residents to new placements.

Top state officials say many former Glenwood residents are now thriving in their new care. But that has not been DJ Johnson's experience, her sister Debra Johnson says.

Earlier this year, Johnson decided they had had enough. She is selling her house in Marshalltown, packing up her things and moving with DJ to Florida at the end of the month. DJ Johnson’s story underscores the challenges some former Glenwood residents have faced in the months since they were moved from the now-closed facility.
