EMPTY BOWLS, FULL HEARTS: The Art Society members gathered after school on Thursday to throw ceramic bowls to be donated to The Austin Empty Bowl Project.

The Austin Empty Bowl Project is an organization that encourages potters of all skill levels to donate bowls to be sold in order to raise money for Meals on Wheels Central Texas’ Meals for Kids and the Central Texas Food Bank.

Ceramics teacher Carey West sponsors the Empty Bowl Project every year in her classroom.

“McCallum has been doing The Empty Bowl Project for a long time,” West said. “I’ve been here 18 years and have been sponsoring it ever since.”

The Empty Bowl Project accepts bowls of any skill level and prices them all at $30.

“You’ll find elementary schools that do it, you’ll find high schools that do it, and even professional potters that participate,” West said. “It’s really well executed.”

The event is held every Sunday before Thanksgiving. This year people will gather at the Central Texas Food Bank to pick out a bowl, and then fill it with their choice of soup. Then everybody will eat together while enjoying the free live music provided by local musicians.

“I like that it uses your talents to help others,” West said, “using an internal art to benefit an external purpose.”
