Goaltenders, with the start of the nhl season, it was just a matter of time before there was an example of when not to use the RVH.

First, let’s start with this premise. An RVH is not a save. An RVH is a starting point. Ideally, it is utilized when the puck is in close proximity to the net or right behind the net and can be immediately jammed and stuffed in or passed to a weak side threat that is in tight. If the puck is shot, you still have to track it into you and cannot rely on the technique and assume that the puck is just going to hit you. If the puck is passed, as your eyes track ahead, your body weight must transfer so you present your whole body square up over the receiving stick blade to smother the attempt.

Looking at this goal from Philadelphia Flyers Scott Laughton, there are a couple of points to consider here to learn from:

• Laughton is a left-handed shot. He is entering on a bad angle from the left-wing side. Grubauer has excellent defensive coverage here, in the sense that there is no weak side threat and there are three Kraken players in the slot. His options are limited at first.

As you watch this play develop, notice:

• Laughton never drops his head or stick handles. The moment Grubauer drops, Laughton decides to shoot, as he gave him an option. If Grubauer is patient here, the likelihood of Laughton shooting decreases and would’ve forced him to move first.

• Even being in an RVH, Grubauer still has the chance to make the save, however, he turns his head away from the puck, which opens up the high short side.

Learning saves and technique are obviously critical, but it is just as important learning how to read the game and learning when to utilize techniques effectively is just as important. It is also incredibly important to be an athlete. What I mean by this is that you should not rely on your technique to make saves, but make sure that you use your vision to read, react, and secure the puck. Your vision tells you what to do, your balance allows you to execute, and your technique allows you to execute effectively.
