As #PrideMonth concludes, meet Brother Nathan Mulder (Embry-Riddle, Lambda Mu, ’05). Nathan served as his chapter’s recruitment officer and held many leadership positions on campus, including but not limited to, SGA vice president, orientation team captain and officer in the Gay Straight Alliance. This is his story. ⁠

Throughout grade school, Nathan lived with a secret. A secret that made him feel as if he could not express his true self. During high school, he did everything he could to blend in with those around him, with the fear of losing his friends and hurting his family. ⁠

“When I got to college at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, FL and decided to rush PIKE, I knew it was finally time to be honest with myself and open and truthful with my friends and future brothers. During a camping trip my freshman year, I had the opportunity to share my story with the brotherhood and I couldn’t have received a better response – every single one of the guys were immediately accepting and made me feel welcomed, loved, and most of all, supported. It was one of the first times in my life that I was able to be more myself than I had ever been before. ⁠

Pi Kappa Alpha changed my life. Knowing that I had the support and love of my brothers allowed me to finally let go of the secret that I hid behind for so many years and live my authentic life… My brothers are my family, and they continue to play a role in my life (even now 10+ years after graduating). I was blessed to have many of the brothers at my wedding … standing next to me when I married my husband Brian at the Walt Disney World Resort in 2016.”⁠

Since Nathan’s time at Embry-Riddle, he has continued to exemplify the characteristics of a true Pike. Today, Nathan works as a senior business consultant at Southwest Airlines, leading international capacity planning operations. Nathan, PIKE is proud of you!⁠
