Episode 54: In this episode of "DEI in 5," I'm joined by DEI consultant and middle manager expert, Caren Young (@theprofessionaladult ) and DEI strategist & leadership coach, Clarissa "Clo" Fuselier (founder of Inclusion.Logic), as we discuss the pervasive issue of hair discrimination in the workplace.

Despite the existence of the CROWN Act in the US, hair discrimination remains a significant barrier for Black women. We often face pressure to conform to societal standards and biased views of what's deemed "professional" hair, which frequently excludes natural hairstyles like afros, braids, twists, locs, and tightly coiled hair.

We'll dive deep into our personal experiences with hair as Black women and explore the emotional tax of conforming to these biased standards, impacting self-acceptance, workplace focus, and overall health. We'll also touch on how constant hair manipulation and chemical treatments can lead to damaged hair, anxiety, depression, and even physical health issues, as recent studies have shown links between chemical hair straighteners and higher rates of cancer and infertility in Black women.

As a Black woman working in diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), and as a person who has been helping bridge cultural divides since childhood, I have a really unique perspective to offer and a lot of knowledge to share. My hope is that this channel helps inspire others to achieve their goals, think outside of the box, and just... thrive, as you see fit!
