If you’ve seen my Stories, you know I’ve left my home in Los Angeles for only the second time since March — to try out a road trip here in California — for many reasons, but partially because when I polled you in Stories this week, you overwhelmingly replied that road trips are pretty much the only kind of travel you’d consider right now or in the immediate future. And you’d like to see ideas + content about that, from me.

So here I am. One day’s drive North of my home. In a hotel room in a state where I’ve got to be brutally honest, the travel situation is a hot mess.

I’ve driven through areas where you’d have no clue a pandemic is still ongoing. Areas where NO ONE is wearing a mask. No one is social distancing. No one is staying home. No one is acting responsibly. Areas I kept on driving through and did not stop in lest I be part of the problem too. In fact, I only stopped anywhere I could guarantee being alone.

And all I saw was in defiance of state and county orders that ask people to behave in a responsible manner. In fact our own state tourism board: visitcalifornia published the RESPECT code [shown in 2nd slide] asking people to follow practices that will ensure we can get out of this safely and to quote the hotel manager where I had to check in tonight as it was no longer safe to drive and I wasn’t able to sleep in my vehicle as I’d thought I might, “oh we’re packed. You got the last room. Everyone here is escaping the rules in other areas.” When he said that, I almost turned around & left. Alas my room was non-refundable and there weren’t any open rooms anywhere else. By the looks of the people partying in huge groups outside my door, you’d think it was Spring Break for college kids.

So.......should you visit California on a road trip right now? Maybe. I think sonomacounty where I’m headed is being responsible and practicing safe tourism (including requiring masks), but... is everywhere else in CA? Unfortunately, NO 😭 So if you’re coming here, do your research. Don’t go to crowded places. Take this seriously. And please please please  #wearadamnmask 😷‼️
