On this day six years ago, I was in the middle of my first ever trip to @VisitAustria. It was a trip that changed my whole life, really, even though I had already changed my life drastically a few years before that when I switched from being a wedding & portrait photographer to being a travel photographer. It was one of the first times, or it was the first time, that I was a speaker at a conference. Between that and the friendships that I made during that visit to Innsbruck as well as Seefeld in Tyrol — Austria, and that trip in particular, will always hold a special place in my heart no matter how long I live. I’m excited to spend this week exploring the country again, visiting places I didn’t get to six years ago and places that have a long tradition in the history of my family. My mother knew Maria and the von Trapp family in Stowe, Vermont, where they eventually settled after they left Europe during the 1940s. Almost from the time I was born in VT, I actually remember her and I wearing dirndls and I remember how Austria and Vermont were often discussed as places with so many similarities; from the physical similarity of their mountain peaks and green pastures to the way each place’s residents revere nature and being close to the land. It’s that last theme, of being close to nature, that I am excited to have as my primary focus for this adventure of being on #AustrianTime Since my grandmother used to play ‘The Sound of Music’ movie to keep us occupied when I was a little girl and I watched it so many times that I actually had it memorized, you might see some references to that as well when I am in Salzburg. (And yes, I know the movie took some liberties with the story of the von Trapp family.) Anyone for a few lyrics? Ha!
