During our stay at @forttiracolheritagehotel we took a walking tour of the local village with one of the villagers, Angelo. It was so special to learn more about the area through the eyes of a local. From the grassy plateau overlooking the sea that's next to the Fort, to the seaside gathering area they all use for special events. He told us about the cross that sits on its own island far our from shore, a way for them to watch tide levels and a warning if the water level gets too high. We drank coffee together on the veranda of his home, spotted monkeys in the trees and tasted spices like tamarind freshly fallen from the limbs. It was hot in the sun and cool but humid in the shade. I loved the kaleidoskope of colors and the details that at times were so indicative of India, like this Kingfisher sign, yet at other times made me feel as if I was far away in a Latin country, like the prevalence of Catholic shrines. Rainer, who runs the hotel, employs mostly villagers at Fort Tiracol and does the same at his other properties. The walking tour is available to any guest, it wasn't special just for us. I can't directly quote him but I get the feeling he views the act of supporting the people of Goa, a mission that's as important as providing a beautiful and comfortable place for his guests to stay.
