For lovers of history, spooky stories (or a bit of both!!), here are 5 haunted spots in Edinburgh to save for YOUR visit list 👻🎃

📍 Edinburgh Castle
👻 Hundreds of years ago, a network of tunnels were uncovered running from the castle down the Royal Mile. To see where they went, a piper was sent to investigate, playing his bagpipes as he travelled so the people above ground could track his location. However, when he reached halfway to Holyrood Palace, the pipes stopped. Soldiers went down to find him, but was never found and the tunnel was sealed up. 

📍 The Blair Street Vaults
👻 The deepest and most extensive set of Edinburgh vaults, these were intended as storage areas and workshops, but soon became used by Edinburgh’s criminals for unlicensed whisky distilling, brothels, gambling pubs and even thought to be utilised by body snatchers to store corpses in the cool, dark conditions. 

📍 West Bow
👻 The location of the former ‘Haunted House of Horrors’ previously owned by Major Thomas Weir, a man executed in the 17th century for horrific crimes including bestiality, incest, necromancy & witchcraft. After his death, no one could face living in the house where such evil acts had taken place and it remained empty for over a century. 

📍 The Scotsman Hotel & Picturehouse
👻 This once served as the headquarters for the city’s newspaper (The Scotsman) as well as the Evening News. Past employees of the building are said to still haunt its halls, including the most notable, the ‘Phantom Printer’ who tragically fell to this death.

📍 The Tolbooth Tavern
👻 Part of the original Canongate Tolbooth which was built in 1591. Many have claimed to have seen a lady sitting in the back booth of the bar staring out the window, and say she leaves a distinct smell of rose petal perfume in the air.
