October is hazelnut season in Oregon. As the fall foliage hits it peak, but before the rains come, the Willamette Valley’s roughly 1,000 hazelnut farmers are busy collecting their crop.

More than 60% of the global hazelnut supply is grown in Turkey. In the United States, however, Oregon is the hazelnut king. Roughly 99% of all hazelnuts in the country are grown in eight counties in the Willamette Valley, according to the Oregon Employment Department.

Nearly all of the state’s 93,000 acres of hazelnut orchards are found in Benton, Clackamas, Lane, Linn, Marion, Polk, Washington and Yamhill counties, the agency reports. Those orchards alone produce about 5-6% of the world hazelnut market.
