Getting in the Halloween spirit? 🌚⁣
⁣
This image of the Moon was captured on Sept. 17 in Cleveland, Ohio. This was no ordinary full moon — this was a partial lunar eclipse and a supermoon. ⁣
⁣
During a lunar eclipse, Earth comes between the Sun and the Moon, blocking the sunlight falling on the Moon. A partial lunar eclipse happens when only part of Earth’s shadow covers the Moon.⁣
⁣
The term “supermoon” was coined in 1979 as either a new or full moon that occurs when the Moon is within 90% of its closest approach to Earth. Since we can’t see new moons, full supermoons are the attention-grabbing, biggest and brightest Moons of the year.⁣
⁣
Image description: The full moon glows a bright white color against a black night sky. Gray craters are visible on the lunar surface.⁣
