🇺🇸🇺🇾 Tab Ramos moved to the U.S. from Uruguay when he was 11. He would soon receive his U.S. citizenship and become a key player for the USMNT, playing in three different World Cups.

Speaking to CBS Sports show KICKIN’ IT, Ramos touched on the transition from living in Uruguay to the U.S. and key differences in the two countries’ soccer development.

“I was 11 when I left Uruguay,” Ramos began.

“I remember telling my father ‘Out of all the countries in the world, why do we have to go to the one that doesn’t play football?’” 😂

“It was rough for me. The first six months in the U.S. were very difficult.”

“I started playing youth at six years old in Uruguay, it’s called baby football. But it’s not a joke, you’re playing games you’re supposed to win.”

“You go into a club, and on days of the derby, you’re supposed to win, it doesn’t matter if you’re eight years old. It’s about winning.”

“The soccer in the U.S. is too nice. In Uruguay, you play baby football from six to 12 and then you either go pro or go sell hot dogs.”

“In this country, people are still learning how to play at 15.” 

After his retirement, Ramos went into coaching the U.S. youth teams, with his goal to help develop the next generation of American players.

Out of the 26 USMNT players at the 2022 World Cup, he said he has directly coached 14 of them and has also worked with eight more.

Apart from coaching the U.S. U-20s, Ramos was also the assistant of Jurgen Klinsmann in the 2014 World Cup.
