As rows of over 200 Chemistry 1 and 2 students stood next to their lunch tables crossing their hands over their faces in peace signs to resemble mole whiskers, the chemistry department’s annual Mole day celebration had just begun. Weeks of planning, advertising, gathering materials and finding vendors led up to the celebration in the cafeteria at exactly 6:02 a.m..

Mole Day, an event organized by chemistry students and teachers, is a competition between the classes to celebrate the mole, a unit of measurement in chemistry, and earn extra credit. With a new theme each year such as this year’s “despicamole me” theme, students can participate in Mole Day by playing games and competitions to earn their class points. The class with the most points wins double the extra credit and bragging rights over the other chemistry classes. Activities from the event included “Molesical Chairs,” “Moling” and “Whack-a-mole,” which were planned and supervised by IB and AP coordinators junior Claire Polanco and senior John Kisal.

“Mole Day needs celebrating because it remains the greatest accomplishment and honor of human history,” said Kisal. “My favorite part was by far managing Mole Day through both setting up the games and supervising the activities.”

Mole Day ended with chemistry teacher Susan Hallstrom’s class’s vistory of the event with over 1200 points.
