Artwork by tracieching, inspired by photos from Cristina Mittermeier mitty, paulnicklen, and franslanting | Tracie Ching is an artist and self-taught illustrator who is widely known for her classic engraving techniques and vector illustrations of alternate movie posters for Marvel and Disney cult classics, portraits of global leaders and celebrities, and covers of editorial publications around the world. But with the UN Convention on Biological Diversity (#COP15) under way this week in Montreal, there is no more important portrait to share than those of our planet’s endangered species and habitats.

Today the natural world is disappearing at an unprecedented rate. Its loss poses a grave threat to clean air and drinking water, the survival of wildlife, the prosperity of our communities, and protection from natural disasters, future pandemics, and other intensifying impacts of climate change. The twin crises of climate change and the rapid loss of biodiversity threaten the very existence of humanity on Earth. But only if we fail to act.

This art series, in collaboration with the Campaign for Nature and to be released over the coming months, highlights the goal of protecting at least 30 percent of the planet by 2030 and the recognition of our interdependence with all life on Earth. To prevent catastrophe, we have to rethink what conservation is, moving beyond blanket numbers. We can only achieve that 30 percent goal with the guidance and leadership of Indigenous peoples and with the full respect of their rights.
