“I feel like I truly 'read' my first book at sixteen. School was a riot. My English teacher was just watching me one day. My mother had just died, I was in the closet, and I was really struggling to remain in education. He pulled a book from his shelf, and said in gruff Glaswegian, 'hoi!' And that was it for me.
