Happy birthday to Pierre Curie! Curie, French chemist and Nobel laureate, co-discovered the elements radium and polonium. Though he is most famous for his work with radium, he also discovered that some crystals generate electricity from mechanical energy, a phenomenon called piezoelectricity. The discovery was used in submarine sonar in WWI, and has many applications today.
