#OTD in 1961, Alan Shepard became the first American in space. His historic flight was pretty cozy: At 5 feet 11 inches tall, he didn't have a lot of spare room in the 11-by-6-foot Freedom 7 capsule. Fortunately, he was only in flight for 15 minutes.
