## Caption

Many mollusks sport a lovely shimmer on the inside of their shells from nacre, an iridescent substance made primarily from aragonite (a form of calcium carbonate). Scientists have made a cheap, efficient recipe for synthetic nacre that could one day be widely used as a heat shield for everything from cars to aircraft to sensitive electronics.
