Do you know the difference between a spine, a prickle, and a thorn? (Did you know there was a difference?) Botanists use these terms to refer to very specific structures. Spines are made from leaves; prickles are made directly from the plant’s outermost layer, the epidermis; and thorns are modified shoots, so they can be branched, or even bear leaves.
