A composite image showing some 1,100 miles of #Pluto’s surface. #NASA has informally named the dark, heavily #cratered expanse “#Cthulhu Regio,” an area previously called "the whale" based on its shape. The Cthulhu Regio “whale” is adjacent to the vast, #heart-shaped, bright piece of terrain called “Tombaugh Regio.” Ctulhu Regio likely dates back billions of years, while the portion of Tombaugh Regio pictured here may be less than 100 million years old.
