Naomi Kawase, one of Japan’s most acclaimed filmmakers, has often drawn from her own life and family history to create films that resonate with deeply personal and emotional themes. Her 1994 documentary short Katatsumori stands as a poignant exploration of memory, familial bonds, and the passage of time.

Katatsumori intimately captures the relationship between Kawase and her grandmother, who raised her in the countryside of Nara, Japan. The film, whose title translates to “like a snail,” evokes the slow, meandering pace of rural life and the quiet persistence of memories, much like a snail’s path. Through quiet, poetic visuals, Kawase documents moments shared with her grandmother, from daily chores to quiet reflections, emphasizing the themes of caregiving, unconditional love, and the inevitability of aging.

Using a handheld camera, Kawase’s signature approach immerses viewers into the filmmaker’s world, creating a sense of raw, unfiltered closeness. The 40-minute film blurs the line between documentary and visual poetry, offering an evocative portrayal of heritage and connection, drawing on Kawase’s mastery of capturing life’s fleeting beauty.

Katatsumori remains a vital piece in Kawase’s body of work, laying the foundation for her continued exploration of identity, nature, and the ties that bind generations. For fans of Japanese cinema and those intrigued by intergenerational narratives, Kawase’s reflective piece provides a moving snapshot of the universal experience of family.
