Former USMNT coach Bruce Arena is 73 years old now, but he isn’t retiring anytime soon and wants to keep working hard.

He has been appointed as new head coach and sporting director of San Jose Earthquakes today 👏🏾

Arena is the winningest coach in MLS with five MLS Cups and four Supporters’ Shields. Meanwhile, Earthquakes were abysmal this season— finishing rock bottom on the table with just 21 points in 34 games. They were nine points behind to the team second to last. (Chicago Fire who just appointed another former USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter)

The 73-year-old is the oldest coach in MLS and among the oldest in the world (if not the oldest). He never played soccer professionally, and actually spent a year playing lacrosse professionally when he was young.

Arena started his coaching career all the way back in 1976. To give you context of how long ago that was, current USMNT coach Mauricio Pochettino was only four years old that time. He is now 52.

From college soccer, to coaching U.S. U-23s at the home Olympics, to MLS, to taking the USMNT to 2002 World Cup quarterfinals, to being in charge when the USMNT failed to qualify to the 2018 World Cup, Arena has had an eventful career.

To make things even more dramatic, Arena was doing an amazing job with New England Revolution, where he won them the 2021 Supporters’ Shield, but was placed on administrative leave for “insensitive and inappropriate remarks.”

He resigned from that job last year, and after a long investigation, MLS finally cleared him to work again.

Speaking about that case, Arena told ESPN: “It was just staff joking around with each other in private. I accept any of the criticism and I’m moving forward.”
