Auburn hosts Louisiana-Monroe this weekend for the 12th matchup. While ULM may be an overlooked opponent, the Warhawks have a very interesting history.

Louisiana-Monroe was originally founded in 1931 as Ouachita Parish Junior College. The school went through multiple name changes over the ensuing years before landing on Northeast Louisiana University in 1969. At the time, the athletic teams were called the Indians.

In 1994, Northeast Louisiana made their debut at the FBS level. In just their second game at this level, the Indians traveled to Auburn. The Tigers would win 44-12.

The two teams would play three straight seasons in 1994, 1995, and 1996. The Indians would return again in 2002, 2003, and 2004, but now under the University of Louisiana-Monroe name.

In 2006, ULM announced they would change the Indian nickname following the NCAA's new restrictions and a committee unanimously voted to make the change. "Warhawks" was chosen over "Bayou Gators" and "Bayou Hawks." The Warhawks nickname honors Major General Claire Lee Chennault who served in the Air Force in WWII, flying Curtiss P-40 Warhawks, which are represented on ULM's primary helmets this year. Chennault attended LSU in 1910, however.

Auburn wouldn't face the newly minted Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks until 2008. The Tigers have now seen the Warhawks five times under their current name, with the sixth meeting being this weekend.

In 2017, ULM adopted a new throwback-inspired branding. The ULM letters have a Warhawk head poking out of the center, reminiscent of the NEL logo with an Indian head of past years. This season, the Warhawks went with the Warhawk fighter plane helmets full-time after being used as a one-off alternate in previous seasons.
