Why would a stylist recommend a big chop?

With a first time client, I always assess the hair + ask what are thier goals for their appt. This opens convo for how much length they want to keep. (A lot of curly girls are on a journey to growing the hair out because they have dreams of having long luscious curls down to their butt….(don’t we all.) 🤣
But, for health of the hair, cut shape, + curl results we have to take into account how long it’s been since last cut and health concerns and the overall look of the current finished product sitting in the chair. Healthy hair starts with regular haircuts, or what we like to call “trims” or maintenance.

• First immediate thing I look at is the density build up in the perimeter of the hair. If the perimeter is weak and you can see an obvious change in the density it is most likely need to cut to the density change. Hair can be weaker towards the bottom due to many things but the most common being breakage from neglect of maintenance. In order to have a full luscious look to your curls you typically need to build up weight on the bottom of the cut.

• At the end of the day always remember, just because a stylist makes a suggestion from our professional opinion, doesn’t mean you HAVE to let us do it. Now, does that mean you should, most likely yes. But sometimes we also as stylists need to understand compromise. Curly girls have been done wrong so many times during hair appointments and lots of times don’t get heard and the stylist may just chop without even asking their clients opinion. Or the stylist may say “you have to”…..no you don’t. What the stylist meant to say was “In order for you to obtain the best results possible from todays appointment I would highly recommend cutting to here.” You are the boss and you decide what is aloud to happen in that appointment. I would never chop your hair without your consent.
