🚨 Final Days Alert: Reflect on resilience, history, and our shared ties to the land with cannupahanska Luger’s “Attrition,” on view through this Sunday, November 17 at City Hall Park in Lower Manhattan. This 10-foot steel bison skeleton, resting on native grasses to this region, serves as both a monument and a reminder of the violent impact of colonial expansion on the bison and Indigenous life. 🌿🦬

Through “Attrition,” Luger, a member of the Mandan, Hidatsa, Arikara, and Lakota tribes, illuminates a dark history: between 1845 and 1895, millions of bison were slaughtered to weaken Indigenous communities and drive westward expansion. Their bones—once integral to plains ecosystems—were burned for calcium carbonate, fueling early steel production and industrialization in cities like New York. This single disruption fractured entire ecosystems, severing the vital link between people, animals, and the land.

Placed at the entrance to City Hall, Attrition invites viewers to reconsider our impact on the environment and humanity. Each element of this artwork—from the star-shaped engravings that echo the cosmos to the steel skeleton itself—speaks to resilience and the bison’s cultural significance, a legacy of both destruction and survival.
