Has anyone else noticed this...

TikTok often recommends negative search suggestions like “[creator] allegations” at the top of comment sections.

Pushing such narratives, true or not, can really skew perceptions and is unfair to the creators.

The recommended searches end up acting like tabloids, filled with rampant speculation and baseless allegations, often unrelated to the creator’s actual content.

This not only amplifies rumors and misinfo but also highlights a troubling aspect of digital culture:

The power of insinuation over information.

What’s even worse is how the TikTok search suggestions take you down rabbit holes.

It’s like the Wikipedia effect, where every blue search suggestion takes you deeper and deeper down some topic without any safeguards to prove its legitimacy.

TikTok is leaning more and more into search.

It does search very well in most areas.

And it’s becoming a top destination for search across demographics.

So it’s critical that they refine their systems to prevent the inadvertent spread of misinfo (feed control is one thing, search suggestions are another...).

And it’s equally important for us, the users and creators, to remain critical of the information we encounter on the platform.

I recently chatted with insiderbusiness about this whole TikTok search saga. You can dive deeper with the link in bio.
