To honor #PrematurityAwarenessMonth, we're sharing stories from our maternity units and neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) at Main Line Health. Hear from Jill:

"At 30 weeks pregnant, in the middle of the night while I was home by myself, my water unexpectedly broke. My husband rushed home from work and we made it to Paoli Hospital, where they confirmed my water broke and then had me transferred to Lankenau Medical Center. My labor was successfully stopped. After meeting with the neonatologist, I was given a shot to help my baby’s lungs develop. The short-term goal was to make it 24 hours to the second shot. The long-term goal was to make it to 34 weeks.

I ended up keeping my baby in for 6 days before labor started again and could not be stopped. Blaine Logan made his way into the world on September 16, 2017 at exactly 31 weeks. He weighed only 2 lbs 13.5 oz. Blaine was intubated at birth, and within 24 hours was placed on a CPAP machine. Two days later he progressed to the nasal cannula. Five days after birth, Blaine came off all IVs, nasal cannula and phototherapy lights. One week after birth, Blaine was transferred to Paoli Hospital where he would remain until it was time to go home.

For the next four and a half weeks, the Paoli Hospital NICU staff became like family as we navigated our lives as a family of three. Being first-time parents, we gained a lot of useful parenting information from our fabulous NICU nurses. We celebrated all of the little milestones and became stronger with every set back. Having a NICU baby taught us our first very important lesson as parents: nothing goes how you plan."
