In a driving rain, the Apollo 12 mission lifted off for the second crewed lunar landing mission #OTD in 1969. Less than a minute into the mission, the spacecraft was met with a striking surprise — Apollo 12 was struck by lightning twice at 36 and 52 seconds after launch. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The guidance computer reset and the Command Module fuel cells briefly shut off. Based on scenarios run during training a year earlier, quick-thinking flight controller John Aaron, shown here, proposed a solution: “Try SCE to Aux.”⁣⁣
⁣⁣
SCE stands for Signal Conditioning Equipment. Aaron recalled that normal readings could be restored on its auxiliary setting, meaning that it could run even under low-voltage conditions.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Power was restored, and the rest was history. ⁣⁣
