A Georgia mother has refused a plea deal after being arrested on child endangerment charges when her 10-year-old son walked unsupervised into town. Brittany Patterson, 41, of Mineral Bluff, was taken into custody on October 30 by the Fannin County Sheriff’s Department after her son, Soren, walked less than a mile from the family’s home to the nearby town.

Although the sheriff’s office has offered to drop the charges if Patterson agrees to a safety plan for her children, she and her lawyer have rejected the offer, insisting the charges are unfounded, according to NBC. ’It’s not a super dangerous, or even dangerous-at-all, stretch of road,’ Patterson told the outlet. ‘I wasn’t terrified for him or scared for his safety.’

The sheriff’s department initially contacted Patterson after finding Soren alone in Mineral Bluff but later returned to arrest her at home on charges of reckless conduct.
