Chicago Marathon Race Recap, Part 12:

The words: “Get lost in it”, is a profound statement.
I have heard a lot of things like “get your head out of the way” or “run unconscious”, which are all great cues when you are trying to accomplish Flow State.

Flow State: a mental state where a person is fully immersed in an activity, feeling energized and in control

But what about when you simply cannot achieve Flow State? What if your body and mind are not able to connect because of injury or illness maybe?
That’s where “Get lost in it” can change everything.

In training, any time I felt myself getting frustrated by my body not doing what I wanted it to, I would tell myself: “Get lost in the work”. Don’t worry about the pace, don’t worry about discomfort. Just think about the intention behind what you are doing. You are here to get better. You are here to get stronger. To do that takes WORK. Be so enveloped by the act of working hard that you forget you are even doing it.

“Get lost in it” has changed the way I view myself and this sport. You don’t always need to “shut your mind off” to get to a place of zen or physical prowess.
