The Amazon rainforest, aka “the lungs of the earth”, is one of the world’s most important natural resources. In 2002, Brazil set up the Amazon Region Protected Areas (ARPA) program - to permanently protect 150 million acres of this precious rainforest. 20 years later, the WWF and ARPA are taking stock and celebrating some of their most significant achievements. 

Here’s one BIG achievement: They reduced deforestation by about 650,000 acres, avoiding emissions equal to that released by all American domestic aviation in 2020.
