According to cnbc, he made the announcement on X and said, “I had excellent meetings with Senators yesterday.  I appreciate their thoughtful feedback - and the incredible support of so many.  While the momentum was strong, it is clear that my confirmation was unfairly becoming a distraction to the critical work of the Trump/Vance Transition. There is no time to waste on a needlessly protracted Washington scuffle. Thus, I’ll be withdrawing my name from consideration to serve as Attorney General.  Trump’s DOJ must be in place and ready on Day 1.”

His withdrawal comes after allegations of sex trafficking a minor girl and sexual misconduct and illicit drug use were brought to the forefront once again. CNN’s #PaulaReid alleges that Gaetz’s announcement of withdrawal came less than an hour after the news outlet reached out for comment after a woman told their ethics panel that she had had two sexual encounters with Gaetz in 2017 when she was 17 years old.
