More than 200 kids participated one recent Sunday. Teams came from the Shrub Oak Athletic Club (Lakeland and Yorktown with other school districts represented), New Castle (primarily Chappaqua schools that feed into Horace Greeley High), Bedford-Katonah (whose players might someday don John Jay-Cross River or Fox Lane High uniforms) and the Somers Youth Sports Organization.

The weekly turnout was high, fueling expectations not just for the new league’s continuation and, possible growth, but also for the growth of the game, both in terms of skill and numbers, on the high school level.

Each fall, high school programs lose scores of top athletes to soccer and even some to year-round club lacrosse programs. The problem, coaches say, is most kids are introduced to and become bonded to other sports well before ever touching a field hockey stick.

“The goal is to expose athletes at a younger age (to field hockey). They’re being channeled into soccer so early, and into lacrosse, we don’t stand a chance,” John Jay-Cross River coach Debbi Walsh said.
