The dangers of getting too comfortable in sport (life).

Have you felt it?
We want kids to feel safe, supported, able to be themselves. When I say comfortable, I don’t mean to say there isn’t value in a safe space- but there seems to be a line that’s been crossed in recent months-

Safe turns complacent. Instead of urging kids to “go for it” and making them feel empowered, lessons sometimes has felt more like asking them to get their shoes off the couch. Respect of the game is a thing of the past. It’s replaced by players commiserating over how many practices they had this week.

More reps has shifted focus away from quality and into moving just to move. Just because kids have “no days off” it seems like some feel entitled to just show up; giving the impression that they think they have already put in the work when…I’m thinking we are further from the actual work required to become elite: discipline, patience, perspective, persistence.

I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve gotten comfortable not being at lessons everyday while I grow other parts of my business and explore what it’s like to write and creatively express myself. After I hit my health goal a month ago, I slipped back into eating in boredom or in exhaustion instead of for nutrients.

Two areas I was diligent in making better a year ago- I let go for a couple weeks and it happens that fast. Our habits flip and we have to find our why again.

One thing about life: there’s no “making it.” Once you hit a peak, it’s just that. If you don’t keep climbing, you’ll slip back. You can enjoy the view but if you camp out there you’ll notice you can’t survive sitting still.

Yesterday I felt it. The complacency. The self-talk in my own head and I witnessed it in some of my students too. Reality: no one can do it all. Some things slip while you’re taking care of all the rest. But when the things that are slipping are what you’ve said are priorities, it’s time to refocus.

The game is harder now. More kids playing makes less spots available, but you still need to be the best. Will the work you’re doing now get you there?

Lots of 2024 left. Here we go #therealwork
