CARD GAMES AND AUDITIONS: McCallum choir students join choir students from other schools playing card games while waiting for Pre-Area auditions on Saturday at Anderson High School.

Six members of the choir program auditioned last weekend at the Pre-Area stage of the TMEA competition. Four pieces of music were auditioned, along with a round of timed sight reading afterwards. According to senior Nathan Howard, who has been participating in this competition since freshman year, the group did very well.

“I’m very happy with how we performed as a team and how we lifted each other up,” Howard said. “[We] really made the most of the moment.”

This year’s round of Pre-Area was different from last year’s. Howard thought that the move for the audition from a Tuesday night to a Saturday morning was beneficial.

“I felt like everyone had more endurance and more energy, which is nice,” Howard said.

Howard decided to join TMEA because of the variety of music and experiences you get along the way of the process. It also helps Howard to connect with people from other schools.

“You create a network between schools of people you know who also are interested in choir,” Howard said. “[My favorite part is] seeing my friends from other schools.’

Another one of Howard’s favorite parts of this round is the holding room before the sight reading round. Everyone in your voice part piles into one room and waits for their turn to sight read. Howard thinks that this experience bonds each other together because the waiting singers invent games to play to pass the time.

“The holding room is always a fun time because that’s everyone in your voice part,” Howard said. “There’s a real camaraderie there, and that’s a good feeling.”

Howard most looks forward to not going to Area auditions alone this year. Howard, junior Coda Becker, sophomore Tegan Hahn and sophomore Riley Pita are advancing to Area auditions on Jan. 11 in San Antonio.
