Tonight in the Don Caldwell Gymnasium, the varsity boys' basketball team defeated Austin High 58-50, their first win over the Maroons since Jan. 19, 2018.

Junior captain Ethan Plummer said that never personally beating them added to the team's vendetta.

"We don't like them," Plummer said. "We definitely wanted to come out and prove a point."

Plummer also said that the team's energy was key during this game.

"We brought great energy from the start," he said. "It was a little rocky at times, but [our energy] carried us through the game and got us the win."

Ending the first quarter ahead 20-9 over the Maroons, McCallum took the lead and ran with it. A Plummer layup at the end of the second quarter allowed the Knights to keep a steady 10-point lead going into halftime, 33-23.

Plummer said that although he didn't feel he played well, he found opportunities to improve.

"I don't feel like I played my best, but I just tried to set up my teammates," he said. "I didn't have my best scoring game, but I feel like I can build off of the way I set up my teammates."

Plummer scored eight points tonight, and senior George Brode contributed 11. Most notably, senior George McCoy had a 32-point game.

Because Austin High is a 6A team, Plummer said that games like this one help the team prepare for what's coming down the road.

"[Austin High] is definitely a really good team, they're well coached," he said. "These kind of games definitely get us in that competitive mindset. We're able to come into district with experience playing through adversity and tough teams."

The Knights are now 6-3 overall, and hope to continue a non-district winning streak on Monday when they take on the Manor New Tech Titans at 3 p.m. in Manor.
