Scuttlebutt:
1) A cask on a ship that contains the water for the day; a drinking fountain on a ship or naval /marine installation.
2) Rumor / gossip 

The original water cooler was a scuttlebutt,  where sailors would gather around and chat about the news of the day.  Today, it is used as a term for water cooler gossip.
